Maths in the Workplace
Wednesday 09 November 2011
Longvernal's first Maths in the Workplace Day was held on Friday with creative sessions including architecture, bridge-building, web design and music composition for different classes.
Visiting professionals worked with the children to demonstrate how maths is used to solve everyday problems, including an architect from Bath practice Stubbs Rich who took children through a space planning and layout exercise, and a local music director showing children the secret maths behind music notation and song structures.
'Teachers want to raise the profile of Maths within the school, and days such as this provide a focus to help achieve that. Our aim is to help children begin to see that Maths is not just a cerebral exercise, but is used extensively in the workplace,' said Alison Phillips, the Maths co-ordinator. 'Showing the children that there is a real-life use for maths helps them to make sense of why we're doing it, and how it could be applied.'
Future days are being planned.
