'Children at Longvernal learn with mud on their hands and smiles on their faces.’
We want our children to be confident, articulate, knowledgeable and resilient individuals who have the self-belief and reflectiveness to contribute to their community and wider society as inclusive, global citizens.
Our Values
Our values help our children and adults to decide the choices they make.
Oracy ensures every child feels heard and valued, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging throughout our school. We regularly host Oracy Showcases, inviting parents and members of the wider community into school to see and hear what the children have been learning. In our recent STEM Oracy Showcase our Oracy Leaders played a key role—welcoming guests, leading investigations, and helping to plan and deliver the event. These opportunities strengthen connections between home and school, and give children a real sense of pride and ownership in their learning.
Through speaking and listening, children are encouraged to express their individuality and creativity. We recognise and celebrate the diverse cultures, backgrounds, and voices within our school community—including regional accents. Every voice is valued, and our learning environment is enriched by the unique contributions of each child.
Oracy supports children in learning to listen attentively and appreciate different perspectives, building mutual respect in every conversation. Our restorative behaviour policy is rooted in talk, helping to develop trust, empathy, and respectful relationships across the school community.
We hold high expectations for oracy, embedding it at the heart of our behaviour policy and recognising it as a key part of academic and personal success. An oracy-based pedagogy underpins our approach to teaching and learning, supporting an engaging, innovative curriculum where talk is central to how children construct meaning, make connections, and deepen understanding. Children's spoken achievements are celebrated throughout the school.
Oracy nurtures confidence and helps our children to thrive. We embrace linguistic diversity through our Reading Spine and provide a wide range of opportunities—such as the Midsomerset Festival, Speak Out Debating Competition, poetry slams, and year-group productions—for every child to grow in self-esteem.
Children develop the skills to collaborate, express disagreement respectfully, and solve problems together. Our Well-being Snug includes a dedicated space for oracy-based restorative practices, supporting positive peer relationships.
Through our PSHE programme, curriculum content, assemblies, visiting charities and agencies, Equalities Team and School Council, Longvernal Primary strives to challenge prejudice, promoting inclusion, equality and respect for others as individuals. We are committed to tackling racism, stereotypes, homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. We strive to make school a place where all pupils and staff, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people are accepted without exception. We champion diversity and celebrate difference.
